NOTE: This week we will meet on WEDNESDAY
Say hello to our little friend and join us for the Sundance Classics screening of Brian DePalma’s notorious remake of Scarface, starring Al Pacino and MIchelle Pfeiffer.
This will be a normal admission price screening. Advance reserved seating is available through the Sundance Cinemas website.
The Madison Film Forum wants you to stream one great film every week, attend at least one great film every month, and meet people doing the same. We don’t sponsor these screenings, we just support them by showing up.
DePalma’s Scarface has certainly had a critical revival since its original critical drubbing in 1983. We’ve aggregated a few original and more recent reviews at our Flipboard Magazine. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 84% Freshness Rating (and a 94% Audience Rating).
Review highlights, on both sides of the spectrum, include:
“What were Pacino’s detractors hoping for? Something internal and realistic? Low key? The Tony Montana character is above all a performance artist, a man who exists in order to gloriously be himself.” Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times
“Characterization and plot go out the window. Arms are cut off with chain saws. By the third hour everything is out of control.” People Magazine
“Still a must-see for Pacino’s potent and influential performance.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
