Let’s support the WUD Film Mini-Indie Film Festival by showing up to as many films as we can (the full lineup is at wudfilm.com). But for this special Saturday Madfilm Meetup, let’s check out the French-Belgian animated film, Ernest & Célestine. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature this past year, but lost to Frozen. While aimed at younger audiences and based on the children’s books by Gabrielle Vincent, the film is sure to please animation fans of all ages.
The Madison Film Forum wants you to stream one great film every week, attend at least one great film every month, and meet people doing the same. We don’t sponsor these screenings, we just support them by showing up.
The film currently has an 97% Tomatometer rating at Rotten Tomatoes. After our Tuesday John Wick meetup, we will update our Flipboard Magazine with reviews for Ernest & Célestine.
“It moves with the rhythms and emotions of classic kids’ literature, possesses elegance and belly laughs in equal measure, and is almost magically beautiful to look at. And, like bears, it has bite.” Ty Burr, Boston Globe
“Plays out like the kind of picture book that you love as a child and still treasure as an adult. It’s a subtle creation, offering the perfect mix of whimsy for kids and wit for grown-ups.” Alonso Duralde, The Wrap
“Kids will enjoy it for its sheer loopiness, while adult fans of animation can revel in its divergence from every other ‘toon in town.” Mike D’Angelo, AV Club
“The characters are computer-rendered, but the watercolor environments they move in are expressive and detail-rich.” Joel Arnold, NPR
