The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (Isao Takahata, Japan, 2014, 137 min)

Sundance Cinemas, Wednesday, December 17, 9:35pm»

Note: This will be a Wedensday edition of the Madfilm Meetup.

Join us for one of the best reviewed films of 2014, Isao Takahata’s animated feature, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, from Japan’s legendary Studio Ghibli. Takahata’s films are just as brilliant as his major colleague at Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki (The Wind Rises), and Princess Kaguya is 79-year old Takahata’s first film in 14 years. This film will mark the end (or at least a significant transition) for Studio Ghibli and the history of animation, so it should not be missed.

With our Madfilm Meetups, the Madison Film Forum (https://madfilm.org/) encourages you attend at least one great film every month and meet people doing the same. We don’t sponsor these screenings, we just support them by showing up.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya currently has an 100% Tomatometer rating at Rotten Tomatoes (!). You can also read a collection of reviews at our Flipboard Magazine.

Review highlights include:

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is a marvel of Japanese animation, a hand-drawn, painterly epic that submerges us in a world of beauty.” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

“Exquisitely drawn with both watercolor delicacy and a brisk sense of line, the film finds a peculiarly moving undertow of feeling in a venerable Japanese folk tale about a foundling country girl who can’t shake a sense of being out of place.” Nicolas Rapold, New York Times

“What makes Princess Kayuga stick in emotional terms? Its depiction of an extraordinary girl, learning for herself that a life without real joy and spontaneity is only a shadow of a life.” Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

“Distills a millennium of Japanese storytelling into a timeless film that feels both ancient and alive in equal measure.” David Ehrlich, The A.V. Club
