MMoCA’s Spotlight Cinema series continues with the acclaimed documentary (T)ERROR. Spotlight’s program notes explain: “Shot over the course of two years and with incredible access, the filmmakers at first follow a 63-year-old former Black Panther who, barely able to scrape by with his earnings as an FBI informant, takes on different identities to try to gain the confidence of those the FBI suspects may be future threats. Eventually, they train their lens on one of those suspects, potentially jeopardizing the FBI’s operation.”
Review highlights include:
“(T)ERROR, like the punctuation in its title suggests, goes from being a tense procedural and absorbing character study to an astonishing, real-life satire about the surveillance state.” —Bilge Ebiri, Vulture
“Watching a spy sit on the couch waiting for text messages from higher-ups may not sound as compelling as a le Carré novel, but it’s a necessary build to a pulse-pounding third act that reveals how lives are destroyed by half-truths and hearsay.” —Aaron Hillis, Village Voice
