Even before she knew his identity, documentarian Laura Poitras (My Country, My Country) received encrypted emails from Edward Snowden with evidence of illegal covert surveillance programs run by the NSA. Citizenfour documents the first meeting between Snowden, Poitras, and reporters Glenn Greenwald and Ewan MacAskill in a Hong Kong hotel room. Poitras documented those meetings which literally changed the course of recent international politics and history. Citizenfour quietly opened in Madison on Wed Nov 26, so catch it with us before it quietly disappears from Madison screens.
The Madison Film Forum wants you to stream one great film every week, attend at least one great film every month, and meet people doing the same. We don’t sponsor these screenings, we just support them by showing up.
Citizenfour currently has an 97% Tomatometer rating at Rotten Tomatoes. You can also read a collection of Citizenfour reviews at our Flipboard Magazine.
“If you think Snowden is a traitor, you should probably see it. If you think he’s a hero, you should probably see it. If you haven’t made up your mind – well, you get the idea.” Ty Burr, Boston Globe
“It’s a tense and frightening thriller that blends the brisk globe-trotting of the “Bourne” movies with the spooky, atmospheric effects of a Japanese horror film.” A.O. Scott, New York Times
“Citizenfour is an urgent, gripping real-life spy story that should be seen by every American, and quite likely by everybody else too.” Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com
“Adapting the cold language of data encryption to recount a dramatic saga of abuse of power and justified paranoia, Poitras brilliantly demonstrates that information is a weapon that cuts both ways.” Ronnie Scheib, Variety
