Come join us for another Madfilm Meetup at Sundance Cinemas as we check out the idiosyncratic independent comedy, Listen Up Philip, starring Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss. You might remember director Alex Ross Perry from his visit to the Wisconsin Film Festival with his 2012 film, The Color Wheel. Perry’s followup, Listen Up Philip, follows a self-absorbed author as he awaits the publication of his second novel.
We have the good fortune of going to the screening at which Rob Thomas from the Capitol Times and madisonmovie.org will lead a post-screening discussion.
The Madison Film Forum wants you to stream one great film every week, attend at least one great film every month, and meet people doing the same. We don’t sponsor these screenings, we just support them by showing up.
As always we have aggregated reviews of Listen Up Philip at our Flipboard Magazine. The film currently has a Tomatometer Rating of 86% at Rotten Tomatoes.
“Listen Up Philip, the third feature from writer/director Alex Ross Perry, may be this year’s most unpleasant movie I’ve nonetheless thoroughly enjoyed.” Dana Stevens, Slate
“Hardly anyone will feel neutral about this deliberately unfriendly film, but if you don’t respond to it with revulsion you’ll probably think it’s one of the most ambitious and exciting American films of the year.” Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com
“I can’t think of a recent movie that stages with as much joy and wonder the sense of living a life that becomes, directly or obliquely, in action or in idea, the stuff of art.” Richard Brody, New Yorker
“If you’ve ever sat in a focus group and said, “I wish the characters were more likable,” this is not the movie for you.” Alonso Duralde, The Wrap
In the video below, director Alex Ross Perry and star Jason Schwartzman discuss Listen Up Philip at a press conference during the 52nd New York Film Festival. (Keep in mind it is a post-screening discussion, so everyone present has seen the film.)
