This week we will bid a fond farewell to the late James Gandolfini in his last major role as we visit Eastgate to see The Drop, also starring Tom Hardy.
This will be a $5 Marcus Movie Tuesday screening. Advance tickets are available through the Marcus website.
The Madison Film Forum wants you to stream one great film every week, attend at least one great film every month, and meet people doing the same. We don’t sponsor these screenings, we just support them by showing up.
As always we have aggregated reviews of THE DROP at our Flipboard Magazine. The film currently has a Tomatometer Rating of 88% at Rotten Tomatoes.
Review highlights include:
“[Screenwriter Dennis] Lehane’s climactic plot twist is all the more laudable because it springs directly from complexity of character; you realize the truth has been obscured not through a writer’s trickery but through your own simple reading of the action.” J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader
“I found this dark odyssey through an amoral dream Brooklyn curiously invigorating; it’s a masterful construction that held me rapt from first shot to last, that builds intense electrical energy and then releases it.” Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com
“Mr. Roskam’s direction is gratifyingly loose. He lets the story, which is really the least interesting part of the movie, more or less take care of itself, allowing us to savor pungent morsels of dialogue and bits of low-key actorly showboating.” A.O. Scott, New York Times
