Note: This will be a WEDNESDAY Madfilm Meetup.
This week we will return to the fine folks at MMoCA’s Spotlight Cinema for a straightforward yet twisted adaptation of the play Venus in Fur directed by Roman Polanski and starring Emannuelle Seinger and Mathieu Amalric. Admission is free for MMoCA members and $7 for the general public. Box office opens in the MMoCA lobby at 6:30.
The Madison Film Forum wants you to stream one great film every week, attend at least one great film every month, and meet people doing the same. We don’t sponsor these screenings, we just support them by showing up.
As always we have aggregated reviews of Venus in Fur at our Flipboard Magazine. The film currently has a Tomatometer Rating of 93% at Rotten Tomatoes.
Review highlights include:
“Whether you like it or not, Roman Polanski is a great artist, and even the minor films of his fugitive decades glimmer with the claustrophobia and sardonic bleakness of his greatest work.” Ty Burr, Boston Globe
“If you didn’t see the play onstage and don’t know what you’re missing, this Venus in Fur has its demonic, masochistic charms.” David Edelstein, New York Magazine
“Polanski orchestrates this cat-and-mouse game with devilish delight, dancing around Ives’s play as if it were a pagan bonfire, jabbing at it with his figurative pitchfork.” Stephanie Zacharek, Village Voice
Venus in Fur finds Roman Polanski transferring a New York stage hit to the screen with maximum fidelity and facility, and a minimum of fuss. Scott Foundas, Variety
