Godzilla [Gojira] (Ishiro Honda, Japan, 1954, 96 min)
UW Cinematheque @ Marquee Theater, Union South, Friday, July 4, 7pm»
This Independence Day, instead of watching anything that has to do with Roland Emmerich, opt for another of UW Cinematheque’s outstanding offerings: the original Godzilla.
To supplement what will undoubtedly be an amazing screening, and as part of our commitment to encouraging our audience to stream at least one film per week, we thought we’d provide a list of subsequent films featuring one of cinema’s greatest movie monsters. Available through a variety of sources—Netflix, Crackle, Hulu, and Amazon—once you finish watching the original Japanese masterpiece, you may want to take a look at some of these sequels, as well as the English version of the original film (paging Raymond Burr).
As a bonus, we’ve also included a couple of other classic monster pictures in which you may be interested. As a second bonus, we have not included the 1998 version. Sadly, we were unable to locate Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla online (seriously, this film exists). If you find others online that we haven’t listed here, please post them in the comments (official sources only, please).
We at the Madison Film Forum wish you all a happy July 4 and a happy evening of moviegoing for those of you planning to see the always astounding Godzilla, still rampaging after 60 years.
